Father's Day: Sports Fan

By Chloe Thompson

OK, let’s be clear. My dad once memorized game statistics from a local newspaper and shocked friends at a party when he rattled them off, throwing in a few quotes he’d overheard about some crazy goals. We all stared in disbelief before he admitted his ruse
He is just not a sports guy, and probably never will be.
However, I know that many dads are a bit sports obsessed. So I did some digging to find some quality sporty picks, some right here in D.C.

For golf fans, make sure he gears up with something other than a ratty polo from yesteryear. This one from Fila Golf (right) is slick, and the textured pattern creates that slimming illusion that we know all guys constantly think about.
It can withstand even the hottest days—the polyester blend wicks away sweat and is lightweight under the glaring sun. Available in neutral brown and white (Fig and Vanilla) and a more vibrant lavender and teal (Nirvana and Lake).

When he’s got his athletic socks on (find out where to get ‘em here), tell him to lace up with casual-yet-cool golf shoes that work as well off the course as they do on. The ECCO Golf Street Premiers come in a range of colors—I personally like the sepia-colored ones (above), since they’re not as easily scuffed up as paler shades.

As I firmly believe in accessories, your dad should, too. Complete his look with a trendy (and yes, functional and practical) watch from City Sports. I like the Casio G-Shock GA100 Series watch (right), if not for its cool factor (black and red will make him feel like a daredevil) then for the quirky features.
The sheer size of the watch (55 x 51.2 x 16.9mm) is impressive, but I like that it’s shock and water resistant. He can use the stopwatch function (it operates to the 1/1000th of a second) to kick him into high-sports gear by attempts to beat his best time. The watch has both analog and digital dials for an easy read. If he travels a lot, he’ll be happy—the watch also has close to 30 different time zones and four different alarms.

Lastly—what guy doesn’t need a good pair of shades? For a sporty-yet-refined look, I am digging these Boss sunglasses (left). They’re just the right amount of sophistication, even for a man who would rather you buy $10 knockoffs from a pharmacy store. Teach your dad that investment is key.

For something a little funkier, we’re seeing colored frames are the rage among men, no matter what their age. Keep it subdued with a deep blue, like these from Marc by Marc Jacobs (right). We don’t think he’s quite ready for the bright yellow hues we’re seeing in fashion mags … Save that for next Father’s Day.
