Shut The Duck Up
Quaker City Mercantile has been proud to call Philadelphia home since 1988. The birthplace of our great nation and source of some our countries most revolutionary innovations over the last few centuries, Philadelphia is undoubtedly one of America's greatest cities. However, for the last few decades, The City of
Brotherly Love, its residents and its visitors have been plagued by the infernal quacking of tour buses operated by local tour company Ride the Ducks.
Ride the Ducks fills its open-sided, WWII-era, amphibious assault craft with tourists, arms them with plastic duck calls and drives around the city's historical areas and the Delaware River easily 30 times a day. The noise pollution generated by the duck calls and the operators PA system is an extremely regular annoyance to local residents, and Quaker City Mercantile decided to take action on behalf of all Philadelphians. Tasking our interns with realizing our viral Shut the Duck Up! campaign proved to be an extremely prudent decision.
We first invented a fictitious activist, one Walter Sherman, who would be the head organizer and spokesperson for the campaign. Our interns designed a lovely logo and collateral for the campaign, and set up a blog and electronic petition to support the cause. Then they filmed an amazing documentary viral
video about Walter Sherman and his efforts to shut the duck up. The video and campaign attracted national media coverage as far away as Seattle, gathered public support from around the region and forced the owner of the tour to concede to certain demands, including banning the quackers from being used anywhere but on the river where locals wouldn't be bothered. All in all, you really couldn't ask for a more successful advocacy campaign.
