The Science Cheerleader
Darlene Cavalier used to be professional cheerleader for the Philadelphia 76ers. A successful career in publishing and a UPENN Master's Degree in Public Policy later, she is spearheading a populist movement to get regular citizens involved in science and science-related policy. She is the Science Cheerleader, and has
found growing success in facilitating this conversation, rallying the troops, soliciting views from all sides and changing the tone of science and science policy in this country.
At the beginning of her effort to do these things a little under a year ago, she asked Quaker City Mercantile to help her create an identity and build an online audience. Of course we were very happy to help out with such an important cause. We designed her a Science Cheerleader logo and collateral, built her a blog and tutored her in the ways of Internet publishing and social media.
We have to say, she's quite a quick learner. She's averaging nearly 20,000 unique visitors a month on her blog, has a large following on Twitter and her YouTube videos are a big hit. She's also managed to garner support from Penn and Teller, interact with presidential candidates during the last presidential election cycle on science policy issues and has made major headway in lobbying Congress to open up a new Office of Technology.
