Beer In Ads #56: Dr. Seuss For Narragansett
Here’s some bonus Beer In Ads for today, because Dr. Seuss — whose birthday is today — also created ads for the Narragansatt Brewery in Rhode Island during the 1940s. The brewery opened in 1890, but closed in 1981, and then the brand reappeared again in 2005.
Theodore Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss, early in his career did advertising work for various companies, such as Schaefer beer and Narragansatt. I have yet one more fun Dr. Seuss and beer post planned for today, so stay tuned.
The new Narrgansatt also has some additional print ads that Dr. Seuss did for them. Though they’re small and fuzzy, they’re unmistakably his work. There’s two ads here and one more here. The book The Seuss, The Whole Seuss, and Nothing But the Seuss also includes some information about Geisel’s role in the Narragansatt beer campaigns beginning at page 226 (and there’s also more examples).

NARRAGANSETT LAGER
Around two months ago I was drinking Narragansett Lager, which the label brags is famous, brewed by Narragansett Brewing Company in Rochester, New York. This brewery has been around since 1890. I had never heard of it despite spending plenty of years in upstate New York. Go figure. Well, I must admit I bought this beer like 6 months ago, and it has sat in the refrigerator since then, always being passed up for something more intriguing. And I must also admit I have had extremely negative thoughts about this beer, for no reason whatsoever. But I'm over it. The label says "Made on honor. Sold on merit" and quotes a customer as recalling a famous breakfast special: "two pickled eggs and a 'Gansett". Ugh!

Narragansett Beer: The Reason Miller Highlife Needs To Shut Up.
I have been meaning to write this post for some time, but was truly inspired to finally put my fingers to the keys after meeting Eric Spitz of Narragansett tonight in Emerson’s Social Media class. Being a college student, I am constantly tempted by cheap beer… its at parties, its at bars and fits nicely into our budgets. The downside of course is that cheap beer tastes horrible. No really, if you have not had cheap beer in awhile go out and pick-up a six pack of Bud Light… I promise you, you wont get through the first can or bottle.
